The glazed tilemaking art was born in the 9th century AD, The Seljuks
brought this art from Anatolia. Between 14-17th centuries it was developed
by Turkish artists in Ottoman period. Ottoman artisans performed around
İznik (Nicea), an artistic and cultural center in northwestern Anatolia.
Therefore, these magnificent works are named "İznik Tiles".
This craft became almost extinct around 17th century AD, when the limited
number of craftsmen passed away without passing their skill on to the
future generations.
